Recent changes in the law have drastically expanded an attorney's obligations under HIPAA. Those who represent healthcare providers and related organizations are generally considered "Business Associates," and therefore are subject to direct civil and criminal liability under HIPAA. Carol Scott is a partner at Hinshaw & Culbertson. Her practice focuses on health care law and labor and employment law. In her health care practice, she advises clients on a wide range of business, regulatory, corporate and compliance issues.
